Crested Screamer (Chauna torquata)

  • Although the Crested Screamer bears little resemblance to a duck, the species is actually a member of the order Anseriformes, like all waterfowl.
  • Screamers are native to South America, where they inhabit swamps and estuaries and feed on plants and seeds.
  • They are often found sharing grazing land with cattle.
  • They sport two bony spurs on each wing, which may be used as a defense against predators and rival Screamers.

Habitat: The Crested Screamer lives throughout the pampas of northern Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil and the subtropics of Bolivia and Paraguay.  They prefer tropical or subtropical lakes, lagoons, marshes, flooded fields, meadows and llanos.  Out of all the different types of screamers, the Crested is the most numerous but is also the most hunted.
