Common Eider  (Somateria mollissima)

 

Largest of all northern ducks, these birds court in winter and spring.  Females possess a  phenomenonal homing ability and frequently return to the same nesting area of previous seasons, sometimes even to the same nest site. Some Eiders have been known to withstand temperatures to -50 degrees Fahrenheight.
