Habitat: During the summer, the American Merganser can be found in southern Alaska and Canada.  During the winter months they can be found all over the US and up to the east and west coasts of Canada.  These birds prefer mature forested fast running streams, rivers, and lakes that have plenty of fish.

Miscellaneous: The American Merganser is commonly known as saw-bills or fish ducks due to their unique beak.  Their beaks are long, thin, serrated, and tipped with hooked nails.  Mergansers are the only waterfowl that will pursue their swiflty moving prey underwater and have superior diving abilities.
